CARPET CUSHION
There are three primary materials used in cushion manufacturing: polyurethane, fiber and rubber. Polyurethane cushion is divided into "prime," or new foam, and "bonded," or recycled foam. Fiber cushion is made with a natural jute fiber, synthetic carpet fiber, or textile fibers. Rubber cushion is made either flat or with rippled rubber. Polyurethane and rubber products are most commonly found in lobbies and corridors of multi-family facilities. on stairs, and under loop-type Berber carpet where a thin, firm cushion is desirable. All three categories can be used in light, moderate or heavy traffic areas in the home and are available in a variety of weights, densities and thicknesses. Generally speaking, for heavy traffic areas, the Carpet Cave recommends using heavier, higher density cushion. Typically, a better grade of carpet cushion will improve the feel and performance of the carpet system and extend the life and look of the carpet.
Why is Prime Polyurethane Cushion the better choice?
Most cushion is rated by the pound in a cubic square foot, which means if you chopped up a 6lb. cushion and stuffed it into a cubic square foot
it will weigh six pounds.
Rebond urethane is made of foam salvage, scrap and recycled foam. The small chunks are bonded together with glue binder and pressure. So part of that weight is glue. There are always air pockets between the
chunks of foam and glue which has an inferior and uneven feel compared to a Prime Polyurethane. Prime Polyurethane’s structure is more close celled and less porous than a spongy rebond cushion. Rebond will bottom out a lot quicker in the
high traffic areas compared to a Prime Polyurethane. Prime Polyurethane will not soak up spills like rebond will.
Prime Polyurethane is more expensive than rebond but very much worth it if your going to stay in your house for 5 years or
longer.
